Head & Hair Gear for Natural Hair

It's not always east to find hats and accessories that suit your natural hair but when you do, it's a wonderful thing. Besides being stylish, hats, scarves and other natural hair accessories can help to get you out the door in minutes. Check the pictures of some of our favourite looks below then watch the video at the end for styling tips and ideas.

1. The scarf is super-easy and perfect for the woman who loves the afro-centric regal look. If you're in Jamaica, you can find a scarf here.

2. The Baseball or Kangol Cap is easy and fun. If you're going super casual to the gym or an outdoor event, this may just suit your style. Remember, you don't have to wear your hair out as shown in the pic below. You could also do this with cornrows or a low bun. Bonus? You won't have to worry about the wind blowing hair into your face. Tip! Be sure to buy one that accommodates size adjustment for your varied natural hairstyles.

3. The Headband is great for adding a little sparkle or spunk to your natural hairdo and works well to keep your hair out of your face too.

4. Fascinators add extra glam and can also be perfect for weddings when done in white.

5. The Fedora is a simple and trendy way to look stylish on the weekends. Tip - If you have trouble getting one to fit, find your size. Lots of stores carry different sizes and sometimes the solution is as simple as looking online, visiting a few stores or twisting/cornrowing your hair before you top off your 'do.

6. The Tam. Well, that's what I call it but some people call it a beanie. LOL. This is probably the absolute easiest it's gonna get when it comes to hair accessories. Throw it on (and pin it down on the sides if necessary) before dropping the kids to school. If you can't find one lined with satin, be careful of wearing it for too long since the wool can dry out your hair.

7. Broad rimmed hats come in a variety of styles. Traditional church hats are great too. It's all about your personal style and comfort level. Not everyone like the extra attention and super glam look but it's certainly a very special and luxe look.

FINAL TIP!
Many hats come in fabrics like cotton and felt that can dry out and break your hair. Consider buying a satin headband or maybe even a satin cap and wear it under your headgear to protect your hair.

How to Style Quirky & Vintage Clothing

Source

If you like quirky or unusual pieces (like traditional african printed jackets or vintage beaded vests), pair them with something modern and hip (like skinny denim jeans) to keep your look modern, stylish and trendy. Modern silhouettes and trendy pieces provide an updated canvas for your unusual pieces to keep you looking fresh and young.

This model is wearing a nice african-esque printed skirt and shiny oxford-like shoes but she pairs it with a modern semi-sheer  on-trend blouse and belts it at the waist to keep her look updated. It shows tons of personal style that doesn't look overwhelmingly quirky or distracting.

Your Editor-in-chief's Transitioning Salt & Pepper Night Out

KiK Magazine Editor, Diedre with her Hair Stylist, Natalie of Aldejahs

Ridiculously excited about meeting and interviewing celebrity hair stylist, Felicia Leatherwood (blog post coming next week) before the Nettle and Moss Event,  I decided to visit my trusted stylist for a 'do. Since transitioning back to natural hair again, I've been excited about all my new growth and wanted to play with a new style and a new trend - grey hair. After years of wanting to dye my mane grey and seeing celebrities trying it out, I decided add in a few strands of grey kanekalon hair instead.

Rihanna sporting salt and pepper (grey) hair

I'm probably alone here, but I love to leave the salon with my hair minimally styled. This allows me to customise it to my own look and Natalie is very accommodating. So, I asked her to leave the front uncurled the day before the event so that I could do my staple, funky pompadour. You can see that pic below.

Natural Hairstyle on Transitioning Hair with Grey Kanekalon bits included

I really love the greyish silver highlights. They match my natural grey perfectly and aren't extremely distracting. They just add an extra bit of dimension and style.

Being the busy bee I am, I set my hair on perm rods the night before the event. I'm sure Natalie could have done better but such is my busy life. See me hair at the Nettle and Moss event below. I took a minute to pose for the camera with my hair stylist.

Well, Felicia loved my hair so much that she asked to meet my stylist, Natalie, at the Nettle and Moss hair event and further asked her to help style the big chop winner for the night.

Monday Music | Janelle Monáe - Dance Apocalyptic

Janelle Monae in the music video, Dance Apocalytic

Ms. Monae has been a long-time style icon for many naturals. She is sporting a very new look in this recently released music video for Dance Apocalytic. Check it out below.

Janelle is widely known in the natural hair community for her awe-inspiring kinky curly natural hair and extravagant but wearable pompadour hairstyle.

I dare to say that she is better known for her hair and beauty than her music, but what do you think about Monae's new music video for Dance Apocalytic?

Solange Stuns at the 2013 Met Costume Institute Gala

Singer Solange Knowles stunned at the 2013 Met Gala in a dazzlingly beatiful leg-baring leg-baring blue and black design by Kenzo with a trend-appropriate Edie Parker box clutch.

Solange wore simple black sandals with matching black nail polish that worked well with the busy print. She topped off the look with a show-stopping Afro, large statement earrings, a smokey eye and neutral lip. Is this strong yet understated perfection? Is her look hot or not?

Nailing the Black and White Fashion Trend (Nail Art Edition)

March Jacobs – Spring 2013

Black and white was possibly the most consistent trend on the Spring/Summer 2013 New York Fashion week runways and Marc Jacobs did it well in a new and fresh way. The chic and effortless look already has women experimenting in new ways of pairing black and white in their wardrobe. Today, be inspired in a different way. Watch the tutorials below to see how you can introduce the shade on shade trend in your nail art designs.

These nail art design tutorials are for everyone. Whether your personal style is chic, girly or edgy, there is a black and white nail art design here for you. There are also easy and more advanced looks so you can find something for your level of competence no matter how basic or complex your skill level.

Most of the designs seen on the runways featured very block-type styling with polka dots and stripes. Here is another way in which you can experiment in block styling on your nails with a puzzle style design.

Now, if you are more into the feminine look, there is something for you too. The video below features an easy but more time-consuming swirly design created using a simple water-marbelling technique.  The nail art design tutorial that follows features a free-hand drawn design.

Now, if you're into the more edgy look, this nail art video tutorial is the one for you. If you don't have studs, go for something else of try silver dots. Just get creative.

I hope that one of these nail art looks inspired you to create something fun and beautiful this weekend. Which one of the nail art looks was your favourite?

Thanks for coming by and don't forget to sign up here so that you'll be alerted when we release the next issue of KiK Magazine.

Beyonce Pepsi Can Inspired Nail Art

I feel like a too-old  30-something year old groupie saying this, but the Beyonce themed Pepsi can is HOT. Being a lover of metallics and jewel tones, I had  to do something inspired by the can. The result – an abstract nail art look.

Abstract Beyonce Pepsi Can  Inspired Nail Art Design

The artist in me indulged in a litttle abstract representation using two accent nails per hand. It was great fun and complete professional abandon. The bright, spunky abstract nails make me happy.

I started off with the colours above and ended up using all but the bright blue one. The colours are:

  • Misa – A Sin Worth Committing
  • KleanColor  – Pearl Silver
  • KleanColor – Neon Pink
  • Jordana – White
Forgive me while I indulge is my weak, bootleg Andy Warhol Inspired nail collage picture below. Hahaha.

Try something new... maybe this weekend and enjoy the pool of creativity that you have been afraid to swim in.

Top 5 Models of Ray Ban Sunglasses

Celebrities wearing Ray Ban Sunglasses

Ray Ban sunglasses are a classic choice for anyone who wishes to have style and sophistication when blocking the sun’s rays. Ran Ban’s have been a staple in sunglass-wearing for decades and continue to be a top choice to this day. There have been many styles of Ray Ban sunglasses over the years and a few styles have remained a popular choice for both men and women. Below are the top five Ray Ban options and a short history of the sunglasses.

Beyonce Wearing Ray Ban Sunglasses

History of Ray Ban

It was during the 1920s and 30s that the aircraft industry boomed. Planes had greatly improved and they were able to go higher into the skyline. This meant the planes were closer to the sun and pilots began to experience serious sun glare. It was an American test pilot who asked Bausch and Lomb to try and make a suitable pair of eyeglasses for pilots. The company worked hard and created Ray Bans. The glasses quickly caught on and not just for pilots, everyone began wearing them.

Types of Glasses

There are many types of Ray Ban glasses available in the market today but the first few types have remained the top choice for those who want to look their best. Aviators will always be the top choice as they were the first style available but others have caught on as well including The Jackie, Wayfarer, Clubmaster and more.

Aviators
Aviator Ray Ban Sunglasses
Aviators were the first pair of Ray Bans and continue to be the most popular. Pilots and military began wearing the glasses first and the public was not far behind. The first pair was designed in 1937 and continues to be a great option today.

Wayfarer
Wayfere Ray Ban Sunglasses

The next design for Ray Ban was the Wayfarer. This look came out in 1952 and was the classic black sunglasses. Another icon was born in the sunglasses genre as movie stars and rock stars began to wear the Wayfarer, the symbol of cool. Such stars as James Dean and Roy Orbison made this style of sunglasses very famous.

The Jackie

The Jackie Ray Ban Sunglasses

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is a style icon that will never cease to exist. Jackie had a classic style all her own and is still patterned after to this day. Ray Ban understood the charm and style that she exuded so they created the Jackie Ohh which has become a top choice for many.

Clubmaster
The Clubmaster Ray Ban Sunglasses

The Clubmaster is another popular choice for those who love Ray Ban sunglasses. This pair combines the lens style of an aviator to the frame style of the Wayfarer, which can be a deadly combination! The two combined creates a unique look and is very popular among Ray Ban fans.

The Cats
The Cats Ray Ban Sunglasses

Cats are another style of Ray Ban that combines two styles; The Jackie Ohh and the Wayfarer. These two blend nicely and give the wearer a sense of style and sophistication.

Find the Fake

Because Ray Bans are so popular, many try to emulate them and fakes are common. It is important for the true Ray Ban fan to understand how to find the fake. Bausch and Lomb sold out to Luxottica, an Italian group in 1999. So Ray Ban will not have a Bausch & Lomb label. So if you see such a label on a new product then you know the item is a fake.

The newer models also have the word RAY-BAN carved along the width of the lens as well as the width of the bridge. If these areas do not have this carving then they are a fake.

These are just a few tips on how to find the best Ray Ban options as well as how to spot a fake. Find the perfect style for you and give them a try, you will be glad you did!
