Seven Makeup Brushes that Every Beginner Should Have

by Nicole of Nicole Webster Makeup

As a beginner to makeup, it is easy to get overwhelmed with all the makeup brushes out on the market today.  You can find a brush to do almost anyting! How do you know which ones to choose? Do you really need that particular brush? How do you use that particular brush?

Below you will find the top seven brushes I recommend every beginner start with, along with some tools and one brush that is great but can be tricky.

1) Big Powder Brush: Because of the fullness and  density of a big powder brush,  it is great for for applying soft loose and pressed powders all over the face & body.  The larger and fluffier the brush, the more defused the powder will be when applied to the face.

Tip: Use outward sweeping motions for a light coverage and application, this technique is great for those with dry skin. Use patting motion by pressing the powder into the skin for a medium to full coverage.

2) Angled Blush Brush: Not only is this brush great for applying blush to the cheeks,  but because of its angled cut, it is great for highlighting and contouring as well.  This brush creates a more pronounced sculpted application, applying  the color beautifully with stronger pay off.

Tip: With the angle of the brush pointing down, begin to apply our blush from the highest point of your cheek (cheek bone) and blend the color downwards for a more natural look.

3) Stippling Brush: This unique duo fiber brush is perfect for applying cream, liquid, mousse or powder foundations. The synthetic fibers (white bristles) extend past the the black bristle (goat hair) which creates a silky appearance.

Tip: Coat the tips of the stippling brush with product and begin to stipple the foundation onto your face until well blended.  This technique will create a beautiful airbrushed complexion, without the airbrush machine! This brush is also great for applying bronzer and other powdered products by gently sweeping over the face or using circular motions.

4)  All Over Eye  Brush (medium eye shadow brush):  A good dense medium sized eye shadow brush is good for a strong color payoff on the lid. It can also be used to highlight under the brow.

Tip: For a sheer color application, sweep the eyeshadow onto the lid from left to right.  For a more intense look, pat/press the eye shadow onto the lid.  If you want even more intensity spritz your brush with a little water first then pick up your eyeshadow color and pat/press it onto the lid for a bold look.

5) Large Crease Brush:  Crease brushes are great for blending multiple colors on the lid, adding definition to the contours of the eye and applying all over sheer color. You want to get a large crease brush with medium density so it is dense enough to create contour but fluffy enough to blend out colors and harsh lines.

Tip: Place brush in the socket of the eye (crease) which is the space between the brow bone and eye ball.  Using wind shield wiper motions, sweep a shadow one or two shades darker than your skin tone back and forth, to add definition to the eye.

6) Angled Liner Brush:  This brush is great for filling in sparse brows and lining the eyes.  The angle gives more control and is great for when wanting to create a winged liner.  The bristles are synthetic which makes it great for cream and gel products.

Tip: spritz brush with a little water then dip brush into your favourite eye shadow color and apply to upper lash line.  The water sorta turns the powder into a liquid form and intensifies the color.

7) Lash Brow Groomer Brush:  With one end of the brush, you can groom and shape your eyebrows  and with the comb end of the brush you can declump your lashes if there is to much mascara on them, making your lashes nice and separated.

Tip: Use the comb to go through the brows and trim overly long strands of hair. The comb will give you more control and guidance when trimming brows.

Tools/supplies that come in handy

Makeup sponges is one of my favourite products to use when applying foundation.  They are simple to use, quick and gives a nice finish.  You can glide the product on or my favourite is to stipple the the foundation on with the sponge.  The corners of the sponge makes it great to get into hard to reach places, such as around the nose, under the eyes and mouth area.

Tip: If you spritz the sponge with a little water before using, it will absorb less product giving you more control on coverage.  Sponges can be washed with a mild soap and reused.

Cosmetic Q-tips are different from regular Q-tips because of the shape and how its made.  Cosmetic Q-tips has a pointy end and a flat oval end.  The cotton is more tightly wound, causing less shedding, which makes it perfect for smudging out eye liner, cleaning up makeup mistakes or even applying eye shadow.

Tip: Use the pointy end of the Q-tip to clean up your winged liner and give it a more precise look. You can also dip the cosmetic Q-tip into some liquid makeup remover for cleaning up any unwanted makeup mistakes.

An eyelash curler can make a world of a difference.  It instantly adds lift and opens up the eyes. Making the lashes look fuller and longer.

Tip: Apply a thin coat of mascara, curl lashes then apply two more coats of mascara.  This technique will hold the curl all day.

The Foundation brush is a great brush for applying liquid and cream foundations, however it can tend to leave streaks (stroke marks) when not used correctly.  When using this type of brush you want to use it in one direction, pulling down following the natural growth pattern of the hairs on your face.  Going against the hairs and sweeping the brush across can leave your foundation looking patchy, streaky and hard to blend.

Tip: This brush is also great for applying your day cream, serums and or primer before makeup application

How to Reduce Acne Breakouts

African American skin

If you suffer from acne/breakouts, then you know it can be quiet an annoying and irritating skin condition to deal with. Acne prone skin doesn't affect you just physically, but emotionally as well. It can lower one's self esteem, making you feel not so good about the way you look. You've probably been to several dermatologist and follow a strict skin care regimen to combat your acne prone skin. But, did you know there are simple ways that you can minimise and prevent breakouts besides using treatments? Here are some simple, easy steps that you can take in your everyday life to minimise breakouts.

Picture
Refrain from touching your face throughout the day. Your hands carry a lot of germs and viruses picked up by touching various surfaces. You don't want to transfer bacteria from your hands to your face.
Wash your hands before starting your skin care regimen.  You always want to use clean, germ free hands before applying your topical creams and treatments.

Picture
Use a separate towel or wash cloth for drying your face.
By using the same towel you use on your entire body to dry your face, you are spreading unwanted bacteria onto your face which will in turn cause inflammation.
Always pat dry and never rub to prevent irritation and microscopic tears.

Picture
Wash/change your pillow case and face towel once or twice a week, or more often for severe acne. Everyday pollutants stuck in your hair rub off onto your pillow and in turn gets onto your face, seeping into your pores while you sleep.
Did you know that by switching from a cotton pillow case to a satin pillow case, will cause less stress and tension on your skin, prevent wrinkles and fine lines and prevent moisture loss.

Picture
Keep your makeup brushes clean.  I recommend cleansing makeup brushes once a week and sanitising your brushes in between uses. You can use just about any type of soap such as dish detergent, shampoo or brush cleaner to clean your makeup brushes. You can use Beauty So Clean brush cleaner or rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle in between uses to keep brushes germ-free.

Picture
Always remove makeup before bed. Sleeping in your makeup clogs your pores and prevents your skin from breathing and getting the vital oxygen it needs to repair itself through the night.
Over time, sleeping in your makeup ages your skin a great deal, making it look dull and tired, even if you feel refreshed and wide awake.

Raw African Black Soap | Uses, Storage, Pros & Cons

100% Raw African Black Soap

Not all natural products are worth the money much less a second glance. There is a soap, however that is gaining popularity for it's natural-ness and benefits. It is called Raw African Black Soap.

Not All Black Soaps are the Same
Many companies are selling Black Soap too, but it is the  Raw African Black Soap, that has been allauded with a myriad of benefits for your skin. If you see a soap that is fully black and does nto have brown and golden tones, it is not the traditional african black soap and has probably been altered to and died which changes the chemical makeup of the product, hence, altering its benefits as well. So what is Raw African Black Soap and how does it differ from black soap?

The black soaps that look like the one above are NOT the traditional Raw African Black Soap

What is Raw African Black Soap?
Raw African Black Soap, an all-natural product that originated out of Western Africa, traditionally contains a mixture of cocoa pod ashes, plantain skin ashes and palm oil. Some also contain extra virgin coconut oil and honey. The texture of the soap is soft so a special storage method is recommended.

Raw African Black soap is not black but ranges in dark tones as shown in this image

Uses of Raw African Black Soap
The soap can be used for your entire body including your hair/scalp and your body. It is most commonly used on the face as a face mask or daily face wash. Some people add water and heat it or allow it to sit overnight in order to melt it for use as a shampoo.

Raw African Black Soap can also be used as a shampoo

How to Store African Black Soap
Raw African black soap absorbs a lot of moisture form the air which makes it very malleable. It will last longest if kept in a sealed, dry container such as a soap dish which snaps shut.  Avoid using zip lock bags etc. as you will lose a lot of product on the bag.

These travel soap containers are perfect to keep out additional moisture

Benefits of Using African Black Soap
Black soap :
  • relieves oily skin
  • relieves eczema and rosacea
  • mildly exfoliates the skin & helps to reduce dark spots with daily use
  • reduces acne
  • is great for removing makeup as it is rich in oils
  • economical (a little goes a long way)
  • helps to reduce premature ageing as it contains antioxidants and vitamins
  • works well on sensitive skin

Disadvantages of Using African Black Soap
  • Black soap can be very drying for people with ry skin or those in cold climates. This can be easily alleviated by using moisturizer after washing. I highly recommend Aloe Vera Gel.
  • Black soap is lauded for it's benefits in relieving rosacea and eczema however it may need to be coupled with a moisturizer as the dryness can cause itching.

100% Raw African Black Soap can be purchased online or in Jamaican at Rêve Jewellery & Accessories in Devon House Courtyard, Kingston or Earth Elements in St. Andrew, Jamaica.

How to Create the Ombre Lip Look (Multiple Tutorials)

The ombre lip became very popular last year but I think that this look is timeless and fun. You can use bright and unusual colours like those pictured below for a dramatic look.

The ombre lip look can work with any pair of colours. The most popular ombre lip features a darker edge or lip line and brighter inner lip. You can also go from bright to dark or just from colour to colour going upwards or downwards. All methods will be demonstrated in the videos that will follow.

Here is the fool-proof tutorial.

Try the tutorial below to achieve that bright, high contrast look.

You can wear the ombré lip during the work week as well. Try a super-subtle look like the one below with a medium brownish red lipliner and a neutral lip colour on the inner lips.

Source – kaiyourmua.com

The simple ombre lip tutorial below integrates 3 colours in a subtle gradation from red to hot pink to orange. I'm actually planning on trying this look on my next night out. Watch it below.

Get Perfect Eyebrows on a Budget | How to Groom Your Brows at Home

Source

Full eyebrows are in so it's becoming easier to groom our own brows. Want to save the US $120 a year  from spending $10 getting your brows done every month? Keep reading to learn how to groom your brows for a naturally fabulous look.

TOP 5 CONSIDERATIONS

Here are KiK's top 5 considerations for starting to groom brows at home:
  1. Get your brows professionally done by someone you trust then maintain that perfect shape at home via plucking. Check your brows every morning to get rid of stray hairs (plucking/tweezing works well for this). Never let your brows overgrow and you should be fine.
  2. Grow out your natural brow as much as possible. This allows you the perfect base and shows where your brow will naturally grow for you consistently. It's always best to work with what you've got.
  3. Outline your eye with a white pencil to see the shape that you want. After this, you can go ahead and safely remove the hairs around the lines.
  4. Avoid over-plucking. Go little by very little. It is easier to fix a bushy brow than a sparse one.
  5. Don't do anything before you watch the video below.

If you have virgin brows, a simple bit of grooming may do. If you don't, grow your brows out as much as possible Using a razor will probably be the easiest way for you to start. Check out the tutorial below to see the best way to shape and trim virgin brows.

If you need to fill in your brows, I recommend that you watch the video below. The technique works even if the ends of your brows are invisible and is far more natural-looking than many other techniques around.

MORE TIPS
  • Ensure that you aren't rushing and have lots of time to perfect your brows.
  • If you're waxing. Ensure that you skin is not moist. If it is, dust a bit of translucent powder over the brow before you apply the way. If your skin is moist, the wax will not adhere to the skin.
  • Use medium brown eye shadow to fill in sparse areas of your brow. It will give it a thicker, natural look.
  • Tweezing is a great way to maintain the shape of your brow once you've perfected it. Check your brow daily to remove stray hairs.

Beauty Tip Tuesday | Eyebrow Waxing

We've been talking about brows a lot lately. Here is a tip for those of you who wax your brows at home.

Ensure that you skin is not moist.

If your skin is moist, the wax will not adhere to the skin. If you have natural moist or oily skin, dust a bit of translucent powder over the brow before you apply the wax.

Matte Lipstick Loving – How to Get Chap-Free, Smooth Matte Lips

Brandy in red matte lipstick for Kontrol Magazine

Matte lipsticks have been synonymous with dry lips for years. That's why a lot of women love the look but hate the chapped look as matte lip colours tend to be very drying. Whether it's with Candy Yum Yum or Russian Red by MAC, you don't want to miss out on my favourite type of lipstick. Here is what you need to know about prepping your lips for matte lipstick to prevent that chapped look on the lips.

EXFOLIATE  & MOISTURISE
Exfoliate your lips before putting on a matte lipstick. Next, quickly add a thick layer of moisture using your favourite lip balm. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, dab off the excess moisturiser, line your lips, then fill them in with your favourite matte colour. Watch the video to see how Tracy does matte lipstick. Keep reading to see recommendations for a good lip scrub or to learn how to make one yourself at home.

If you are on a budget, I recommend making your lip scrub at home. You can store it in a tiny container safely at home or in your handbag and you won't have to go to the store to replenish. It's super-easy and quick to make yourself. Just blend the ingredients below thoroughly then store in a tight-lid container. It can last up to two weeks in the refrigerator. I would say about one week if not.

BROWN SUGAR LIP SCRUB
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp honey

COMMERCIAL LIP SCRUB RECOMMENDATIONS
Here are three product recommendations for lip scrubs.

LUSH Mint Julips Lip Scrub

Its main ingredients are castor sugar and Organic Jojoba oil so there are no harmful ingredients. There are a variety of flavours to choose from that are very fun. This runs about 9 USD in lush stores. You can also find LUSH products online.

Clarins Extra Firming Lip & Contour Gentle Exfoilator

It's not cheap at over 20 USD but most people agree that it immediately moisturises, nourishes, softens and plumps lips so they look supple and healthy. It claims that is aids in reducing the look of fine wrinkles, lines and furrows.

Beyonce Pepsi Can Inspired Nail Art

I feel like a too-old  30-something year old groupie saying this, but the Beyonce themed Pepsi can is HOT. Being a lover of metallics and jewel tones, I had  to do something inspired by the can. The result – an abstract nail art look.

Abstract Beyonce Pepsi Can  Inspired Nail Art Design

The artist in me indulged in a litttle abstract representation using two accent nails per hand. It was great fun and complete professional abandon. The bright, spunky abstract nails make me happy.

I started off with the colours above and ended up using all but the bright blue one. The colours are:

  • Misa – A Sin Worth Committing
  • KleanColor  – Pearl Silver
  • KleanColor – Neon Pink
  • Jordana – White
Forgive me while I indulge is my weak, bootleg Andy Warhol Inspired nail collage picture below. Hahaha.

Try something new... maybe this weekend and enjoy the pool of creativity that you have been afraid to swim in.

Tip of the Week - How to Remove Long-Lasting Lipsticks

Red lipstick is all the rage this season and with poppy red showing up on the Pantone radar as a popular colour for 2013, it won't be going anywhere soon. Keep reading to learn how to remove it and other dark or long-wear lipsticks without wrecking your supple and delicate lips.

Janelle Monae wearing red lipstick at the 2013 Grammy Awards

Long-wear lipsticks usually stand the test of drinks and hors d'oeuvres on a night out but they can be very difficult to remove. Here are some tips to consider before rubbing your lips red-meat-raw.

Method 1

Apply extra virgin olive oil to your lips. Allow it to remain on your lips for at least one minute. Yes, wait the entire minute. Next, use a soft tissue to gently remove the colour. Your lip should be soft and moisturised. Repeat if there is any staining. Always add a lip moisturiser like Chapstick after removing a harsh lip colour to keep your lips moist.

Method 2

Apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly to your lips. Keep it on your lips for a minute or two and then remove the lip colour with a moist cloth. Water is a natural moisturiser but it will dry out your lips if you don't follow up with moisturiser to seal in that watery moisture goodness. Repeat several times until you are satisfied with the results.

Shirley Shares an Inexpensive Brush Storage Idea

Shirley over at shirleybeniang on YouTube shared a clever and inexpensive idea for storing your makeup brushes. She simply poured rice into a clear bowl. She shook the rice to make it level then stuck her brushes in.

You can use any shape container that suits your style. It doesn't have to be transparent. Personalise the idea by finding similar items that you believe may suit your style. Perhaps you'd prefer a red coloured square container that suits your red-accented room. Just make it your own. Watch Shirley's video below to see how she cleans her brushes too.

How to Contour and Apply Blush to Dark Skin | Michelle Obama Style

While everyone was ogling Mrs Michelle Obama's bangs for the inauguration, I was looking at her makeup. She maintained a strong look with her perfectly contoured face, gentle dark eye and  and soft, neutral lips to balance it all out. It isn't hard to recreate her look with the right contouring, highlighting and blush application tips.

Applied properly, contouring can look very natural and effortlessly beautiful. So, what will you need to contour?

Tips on Tools & Products for Contouring & Blush
You can contour with both cream foundation and powders. I prefer powders because I can have more control over the outcome. Use a powder a shade lighter than your skin tone for highlighting and one two shades darker for contouring. You'll get more bang for your buck since most contouring palette will give you less product at a higher cost. IF you prefer a contour kit, you could try one from Smashbox (pictured below).

Smashbox Step by Step Contour Kit

Dark girls, don't let the lighter girls have all the fun with blush. I recently got a heavenly blush set by way of my budget-friendly Bh Cosmetics 26 Shadow Blush Combo Palette (pictured below). You can not only get a neutral to smokey eye with these colours but you will get very brown-girl-friendly blushes. I love to mix the colours together with my ELF Studio Blush Brush to give my skin a gorgeous rosy glow.

Bh Cosmetics 26 Shadow Blush Combo Palette

Watch the video below for the best tips for highlighting, contouring and adding blush to dark skin.

Get Michelle's Lips – Line your lips with a dark reddish brown colour, add a nude lipstick with a pink undertone to the lip or apply a similar blush and blend the liner into the lip colour. Add gloss for extra drama.

Contouring the Nose
Now I'm not a big fan of contouring the nose. Why? Because contouring the nose is not creating a chiselled face or makeup look. To me, you're changing the shape of your face and trying to respond to  a stereotypical idea of beauty.  Your nose is your nose and makeup is only made to enhance. However, I have dabbled in contouring of the nose and it can definitely help to give you that stereotypical look of beauty that many people desire. If you want to, contour away. The video below shows how it can be done.

5 Favourtie Finds of 2012 - Beauty

You don't have to be a makeup guru to make significant changes to your beauty routine this 2013. Here are the 5 things/processes that I'd rather not live without in 2013. Maybe you could try them too.

1. Threading!

I've been getting my brows threaded for a few months and the ends of my brows are actually re-appearing and i don't need to do any crazy filling. I just seems to have naturally sculpted brows. At least, I think so. LOL. All thanks to Sherene, a Jamaican threader. Check her out using the image below. You can also find her ad in Issue 2 of KiK Magazine.

2.  Milani Cream to Powder Foundation

This thing blends into my skin flawlessly. I could literally do one swipe with my finger of this on my skin and you wouldn't know it's there.  You'd just see a section of flawless skin. LOL. I use it with the sponge provided for a flawless look. It doesn't break me out and doesn't make me look oily. Also, I can dance ALL night with this thing and it stays on! Gotta love it ladies. Gotta love it. You should try it if you haven't before.

3. Phillips Milk of Magnesia

I didn't understand how this could help oily skin. I've seen people raving about it for years on YouTube but only tried it this year. It has been a lifesaver. OK, maybe not, but it certainly preserves my makeup look. I apply it with a cotton pad and it keeps my face matte for hours. I used it just yesterday for wedding makeup that lasted about 10 hours before there was a wee bit of oiliness shining through. I apply my makeup on top of this thing with no problems and the combination of it and my Milani magic makeup is fantastic. No more oily skin smearing off my makeup. I love it.

4. MAC Lipsticks

I have fallen in love with the mattes but my favourites so far are in Russian Red, Viva Glam III and  Cyber. I'm so in love. Viva Glam III is my everyday red.

5. Aveeno Positively Radiant Brightening Cleanser

This thing give a great clean that does not strip your skin of it's natural oils. I do two washes and don't need a lot of product. It's a must for me when removing the remainder of my makeup and has positively impacted my acne regimen.

Don't forget to read Issue 2 of the KiK Magazine.
