This is the popular daily/regular two-step method for maintaining moisturized hair:
Step 1: Add a Moisturizer (Example, Shea Butter or Glycerine and Water)
Step 2: Seal with a light oil. (Example, Coconut or Argan Oil)
Most people will tell you that adding petrolatum-based oils (grease) or Vaseline will seal in the moisture of your hair but will also block out any additional moisture from getting in. Sealing in moisture is good, blocking additional moisture from getting in is bad. That's my take... but what do YOU think?
The Creative Lady in the video below is very happy with her results from using Vaseline. Check out her vid before making a final comment. Is it better to focus on the look of the hair rather than the overall health? I mean, is using Vaseline or any other grease for styling really a big deal when you're just going to wash it out anyway. Your hair gets moisture while you're deep conditioning it anyway and you can put a leave-in conditioner before adding the grease so your hair can still have moisture. Right? No? Please respond by commenting. I'm eager to hear what you all think.
Mineral oil is a carcinogen and is not good for our skin or hair. I think it should be reserved for use as a base around edges if you are still perming or applying other chemicals to your hair. Check out this PubMed article for more information. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12715094
ReplyDeleteHey Janelle, that article abstract was really informative. Thanks for putting us on to it. Hmmm. It didn't regard Vaseline as damaging though, so I guess it's not particularly harmful, just not as good or useful as coconut oil for anything but styling.
ReplyDeleteI think Vaseline would work in terms of getting you nice coils. I remember back in the day using Vaseline and water to slick my hair when I was relaxed and it worked. But I think in the long-term it would be detrimental because you would have to use a stronger shampoo to get your hair clean. So, I think it may lead to extremely dry hair because you'd be using a strong shampoo constantly to remove the residue. I could be wrong, but I think with a natural oil, you wouldn't have to use a sulfate shampoo to get clean hair. So, with that being said, in a pinch I may use Vaseline, but it certainly wouldn't be in my normal product line-up.
