PRODUCT REVIEW | Eco Custard

Eco Custard Conditioning, Shining & Styling Cream

I received this product recently and was very eager to try it out. I'm a big fan of Eco Styler Gel and really wanted to see what this product would do. I have two textures since I'm transitioning to natural hair again so I want to see how both textures will respond to the product.

Eco Custard on Transitioning Hair

This product has a custard/gel-like look but was actually very light on the hair. I applied the Eco Custard to dry hair found myself with almost wet hair after applied. I don't think I needed this much product, it's just really light-weight.

PRODUCT FEATURES
  • Infused with olive oil, it restores moisture while reducing dandruff and split ends
  • Alcohol free
  • Flexible hold
  • Extreme conditioning

INGREDIENTS
Purified Water (Aqua), Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Emulsifying Wax NF, Glycerin, VP/DMAPA Acrylates Copolymer, Sodium Hydroxymethlglycinate, Polysorbate Parfum, Tetrasodium EDTA, d-Limonene, Quaternium-15, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, FD&C Blue 1, FD&C Yellow 5.

My Hair after unravelling the bantu knots

STYLING.
Instructions read - Apply to dry or wet hair. Work desired amount through hair and style.
I separated my hair into about six large sections, applied the Eco Custard liberally to each section, twisted them, then bantu knotted the twists. I let my hair dry overnight then added a light oil to my hair when unravelling.

It's never great to have people dive into my hair uninvited but I was so happy that this time my hair felt light, fluffy and soft as opposed to heavy and sticky. The product does contain hydrolyzed protein so I have to be careful that I seal in the water-based product with oil in the future to maintain some more moisture.

Waves produced from bantu knot set on transitioning hair

At the end of the day my hair held up pretty well (pictured below). Actually, i've never had such long-lasting build-up free results from any product I've ever used before since my hair doesn't hold sets very well. The only con I can speak of is that the product wasn't particularly moisturising and must be used with an oil right after application to seal in moisture and after unravelling your style to add shine.

All in all, this product gets a strong 4.5/5. I will definitely be purchasing it in the future.

PRODUCT REVIEW | African Royale BRX Braid and Extensions Sheen Spray

African Royale Braid & Extensions Sheen Spray

I have been using this product for years and although the formula has changed a little over the years, it works very effectively and still remains my moisturiser of choice when wearing single plait, twist or cornrow extensions.

Claims
• Moisturizes, conditions and softens adding luster to hair and scalp
• Contains no alcohol or oils that affect bonded hair
• Improved anti-itch formula

PROS
  • Moisturises, conditions and softens.
  • You can keep your braids for a much longer time because it does not promote build-up but is very light while still being moisturising.
  • Reduces itching.
  • The bottle gives a great mist so your hair doesn't get too wet and allows for even distribution
  • Does not cause product build-up
  • African Royale Braids Spray is very affordable as it retails for under 4 USD at stores like Walmart and on Amazon.
  • Works well on natural or braided hair.
  • The scent is not overpowering.

CONS

I feel like I have to write a con or this wouldn't be a real review so here goes:
  • The product is not all-natural though it works pretty darned well and the ingredients are pretty good for such an inexpensive product.

Ingredients include: Deionized water , glycerin , propylene glycol , PPG-12-PEG-50 Lanolin , Dicetyldimonium Chloride , Polyquaternium 32 & Paraffinum Liquidum , Tea Tree Leaf Oil (Melaleuca Alternifolia) , Polysorbate 80 , Oat Kernel Extract (Avena Sativa) , Allantoin , Silk Amino Acids , Sheep Sorrell , Yarrow , Slippery Elm Bark , Sage , Henna , Comfrey , Burdock Root , Goldenseal , Cherry Bark , Ginseng , Black Walnut , Chamomile , Alfalfa , Hyssop , Wheat Germ , Methyl & Propyl Paraben , fragrance\

Bottom line - try it. I'm sure that people's hair is different but this is very likely to work well in your hair.

REVIEW | Morfose Thermal Guard Serum & Hair Mousse

I received the Morfose Thermal Guard line of products for review this summer. I must admit that I wasn't expecting much regarding performance. I got it from someone with straight hair who raved about the product so I was skeptical to say the least. What got me curious is that the Argan oil-infused line is specifically created for protecting your hair against heat styling (which I do regularly). Here is how I used the products and how they worked.

Morfose Thermal Guard Serum

MORFOSE THERMAL GUARD SERUM – 5/5

Usage
This product was used for my blow-outs on transitioning hair. I used it on damp, towel-dried hair.

Results
Can I give this product 20 stars?! I've never had a heat protectant work this well in my hair. I'm a few months into using this thing and I have never, EVER, had a split end or needed a trim and I use heat regularly.

It also gives amazing slip (is smooth and silky) and aids in detangling. The product is very light and leaves your hair very light as well without frizz.

You don't need a lot of this product so it will last you quite a while. My hair feels very strong, soft and moisturised once I've finished drying my hair and it maintains that way for at least 7 days until my next wash. (I still moisturise and seal my hair every 2 days).

Natural?
No, but it is infused with Argan oil. I really don't care if the product is not natural if it works and this one works.

Stylist Review
I typically wash and blow-dry my hair before going to my stylist. She was amazed. She actually plans to buy it herself to try out on her clients because she'd never felt transitioning hair feel so silky and strong after blow-drying.

MORFOSE THERMAL GUARD HAIR MOUSSE  3/5

Usage
I tried to use this product on dry hair in an attempt to do a twist-out.

Results
It didn't work out. This left an almost sticky feel and is more like a light spritz.  It said that it can be used on wet or dry hair but water is the first ingredient and it did make my hair pretty damp. I wouldn't really use it for a straight style. Of course, because of the water, it cause my hair to puff up a bit.

While my hair didn't feel excessively dry, I'd definitely probably pair another moisturiser with it if I wanted soft, supple hair (which always my aim). It's a moose. I guess if you have relaxed hair or want to do roller-sets, this can work for you. Still, however, I highly recommend applying it with a creamy moisturiser first. I do plan to try this product on dry misted hair to achieve a braid-out on transitioning hair.

WHERE TO BUY IT
Fontana Pharmacy in Jamaica or www.morfose.bigcartel.com.

I'll be reviewing the entire line of Thermal Guard products so stay tuned by subscribing at http://tinyurl.com/6s2rll9.

Asherlee Naturals Hot Oil Treatment Review & Owner Interview

I received some products for review from Sherelle, owner of the Jamaican based company, Asherlee Naturals, and have been trying them out for the last few months. For this post, I will be reviewing the Aloe Vera & Honey Hot Oil Treatment.

The product label describes the hot oil treatment as a vitamin and protein enriched conditioner that moisturises. Uhm... too much protein actually makes hair brittle so that is a little confusing. Regardless, at the end of the day I am completely in love with this product.

I used the product as directed below.

Asherlee Naturals Hot Oil Treatment Information

PROS
  • The Hot Oil Treatment is superbly moisturising.
  • The ingredients are all natural and the preservative listed in the ingredients (Optiphen Plus) is paraben and formaldehyde-free preservative.
  • The packaging makes the product very easy to use.
  • The product is thick and doesn't have a ton of fillers.
  • A little goes a long way so there is good value for money.
  • The product is affordable.
  • I found that my hair is far less frizzy after using this product so I would say that it reduces frizz.
  • Gives long-lasting effects and doesn't need to be used more that once or twice a month.

CONS
  • You may have a little trouble washing it out. I recommend using it as a pre-poo before a sulfate-free conditioning shampoo.
  • I don't recommend using more than once a month if you have problems with humidity and puffing of the hair because I would regard this as a humectant which means that it draws in moisture to the hair.

Ingredients
LOVE, Herbal infused Sunflower oil, Olive oil, Coconut oil, Aloe Vera, Castor oil, Avocado oil, Honey, Essential oil (Tea tree, Lavender, Rosemary) and Optiphen plus.

Did you read the ingredients? They are ridiculously great. Essentially, this product is a hot oil moisture treatment infused with honey which is known for it's very moisturising humectant qualities.

Product Review Nunaat Karité Special Combing Cream and Leave-In Detangler

I know the bottles look busted but the packaging label smudges easily and this product has been USED. Stick around to find out whether the Combing Cream and Leave-in Detangler (same exact product with different label by the way) is any good.

You may remember that I reviewed the Karité products before after using them for just a few short weeks. Here is what I mentioned about using it on my natural hair (I go between a variety of styles from straight to locked etc.):

  • gave my hair slip without sticky build-up even though it isn't entirely transparent
  • dries clear
  • doesn't weigh down my hair.
  • (so far) doesn't impede the effectiveness of other styling aids used after detangling.
  • left my hair light and slightly fluffy to the touch.
  • is great for people who only finger-detangle in the shower or those with longer hair who don't want to stand in the shower while detangling. Otherwise put, it is great for out-of-shower post-shampoo/conditioner detangling.

Here are my final thoughts on the product.

How to Deal Manage Product Build-up with Clarifying Shampoos

You shouldn't have to get rid of your favourite products that constantly give you good hair days because they cause product buildup. Product build-up is why clarifying shampoos were created.

Top Clarifing Shampoos - Suave Naturals Daily Clarifying Shampoo and Kinky Curly Come Clean
Use the products that create good results and follow up weekly with a clarifying shampoo like Suave Naturals Daily Clarifying Shampoo or the Kinky Curly Come Clean. Both are very effective in removing build-up but you may need 2-3 washes to get rid of significant build-up when using Kinky Curly Come Clean.

Keep the following in mind:
  1. You don't have to do a thorough wash every 2 days but focus on the scalp more than the hair if you do. Washing with a clarifying shampoo every 1-2 weeks is usually sufficient. If you need to clarify every 2 days, you may be using too much product but you can still wash frequently if you choose the right pH balanced shampoo.
  2. Unless daily or frequent wash n' gos are a part of your regular routine, only wash your hair when it is dirty. Don't worry about how often that should be. You'll know when you need a wash.
  3. Focus on your scalp when washing if you wash frequently to avoid stripping the hair of its natural oils.
  4. Select shampoos that are pH balanced as they will help to maintain the strength and softness of your hair. This information is usually on the label.
  5. Find the right moisturizing routine to restore moisture to your hair. After washing (on damp hair) add your moisturizer and seal in all the moist goodness with a light oil. This should keep your hair fairly soft if done regularly. Spritz with water and repeat the moisture sealing process to keep your hair moisturized.

REVIEW & COMPARISON | Tangle Tamer Max & Tangle Teezer Detangling Tools

You've probably heard about the Tangle Teezer before. It has taken the online natural hair community by storm for the last few years as one of the most revolutionary detangling tools around for making kinky and curly hair easier and painless to detangle on wet or dry hair. See the review I did last year. Since then, many look-a-likes have  come on the market. I decided to purchase the Tangle Tamer Max  by the brand Plugged In from Sally Beauty in the USA to do a comparison.

COST
The Tangle Tamer Max retails for $10.00 which is $2.99 less costly than the Tangle Teezer.

DESIGN
The design, as you can tell is very similar but there are some differences.

  1. The Tangle Tamer Max features a handle while the Teezer does not. This however does not assist usability as both products are still slippery when wet or if the hand using the product is too moisturized or has product on it. The handle would only be an asset if it had a grip feature - which it does not.
  2. The teeth, though similar in design are different. The teeth of the Tamer Max  re about 1 and 1/2 the diameter of the Teezer. I have noticed, therefore, that the Tamer Max is a bit more durable.
  3. The ends of the teeth of the Tamer Max also seem to be a bit thicker. I will talk about how this influences the ability to detangle in the next section.
USE
As mentioned in 2 & 3 above, the Tamer Max's teeth are a little bit thicker and the ends less pointed. As many people have accused the Tangle Teezer of detangling beautifully but shredding their hair, this could be considered a positive feature for the Tamer. In my experience, however, the Tangle Teezer detangles my type 4 kinky hair just a little bit better than the Tamer, and without any split ends.

Overall, however, there is hardly a difference. The handle for the Tangle Tamer Max doesn't help since I still end up holding the body of the brush instead of the handle anyway.

One main difference is that the Tangle Tamer Max is a wee bit more durable because of the thicker teeth. This may be why I believe that the Tangle Teezer is a weeee bit better at getting into those finer tangles but I would hesitate to definitively say that either is better.

OVERALL REVIEW NOTES
Both products are gently in detangling kinky and curly hair. They can be used on wet or dry hair. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you hair is fully moisturized before it is used on dry hair. This brush is quite versatility, however, and can also be used on straight/relaxed hair.

If I were to repurchase, I would probably  get the Tangle Tamer Max since it is slightly more durable.

REVIEW | Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Moisturizing Twist & Lock Gel

I used the Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Moisturizing Twist & Lock Gel to do small/medium sized twists in my dry, previously moisturized hair. The twists remained for about 4 days before they were removed for a twist-out style. Keep reading as I review with my personal findings and suggestions for use of this product.

The consistency, colour and effect of this products reminds me of the Organics Root Stimulator lock... but this Cantu® one smells better. They pretty much feel like the same thing.

PROS
The Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Moisturizing Twist & Lock Gel:
  • is very moisturizing.
  • does not flake.
  • Gives good twist and braid-outs.
  • does not leave the hair feeling heavy.
  • is not sticky.
  • requires little product for styling and goes a long way.
  • is fairly inexpensive.
  • Contains no hard ingredients.
CONS
  • Depending on your texture, the product may not get a very strong hold. (not for me anyway)
  • Can cause hair to "shrink down" giving the illusion of thinness and thus is best used on wet hair. (has happened to a few people I know.

RATING - 3.5/5
Essentially, the product is good and has a great scent but does not give me any results that I crave. I find that I much prefer the Cantu Coconut Curling Creme which I previously reviewed for twisting. For locks, I would need something else with a much stronger hold, but I am sure that this may work for others, just as the Organics Root Stimulator does too.

Product Details
This product will moisturize, de-frizz and add manageability to your twists & locks, leaving them soft and shiny. Made with 100% pure shea butter and formulated without chemicals or harsh ingredients.
  • For natural hair
  • Restores your real, authentic beauty
  • Controls frizz with a lightweight, non-flaking formula
  • No mineral oil, sulfates, parabens, silicones, phthalates, gluten, paraffin, propylene glycol, PABA or DEA
  • This finished product is not tested on animals

Directions
To comb twist, free hand twist, or double strand twist. Section hair and apply gel to the section. Twist the hair with a comb or fingers. To touch up twist or locks in between shampoos, section hair and apply gel to the new growth. Palm roll or re-twist the hair to touch up..

Ingredients
Water (Aqua) , PVP , Fragrance , Polyquaternium 37 , Cocos Nucifera Extract (Coconut) , Butyrospermum Parkii Butter (Shea) , Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil , Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut) , Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Juice , Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil (Sweet Almond) , Persea Gratissima Oil (Avocado) , Simmondsia Chinensis Oil (Jojoba) , Olea Europaea Fruit Oil (Olive) , Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter , Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil (Argan) , Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil (Neem) , Daucus Carota Seed Oil (Carrot) , Lonicera Japonica Flower Extract (Honeysuckle) , Laminara Cloustoni Extract (Sea Kelp) , Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract , Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil (Macadamia) , Vitis Vinifera Seed Extract (Grape) , Urtica Dioica Extract (Nettle) , Silk Amino Acids , Hydrolyzed Silk , Phenoxyethanol , Ethylhexylglycerin

SWATCH & REVIEW | China Glaze CrackleGlaze Nail Polish

Gleam Me Up CrackleGlitter  (Bright Sky Blue) by China Gaze on Pink Nail Polish

How to Use China Glaze CrackleGlitter
  • The crackle glitters look best on either very light (almost white) or very dark (almost black) polishes. These really allow the glitter to POP.
  • Put topcoat on before applying crackle as this allows it to crack more easily, especially if you aren't using a drying machine in a salon.
  • Add a topcoat on top of the glitter to help the glitter to pop even more.

China Glaze Crackle Glitters

The base of the glitter is clear. That allows the colour underneath to pop. I'm not sure that this is the best idea though since I would think that the glitter should be the focus. I would prefer a coloured base to the glitter polish so that the glitter has a base on which to build and therefore will stand out more.

It took me a while to get used to this look. Many people think it's cute. Thing is, I'm not really a "cute" kinda girl. But, if you are, this is perfect for you. I will only be using these crackles on dark colours. Subscribe to www.keepitkinky.net for more swatches in the future on dark nails..

REVIEW | Square Bowling Bag with Pockets by Zara

I am in love with my recently purchased Zara bag, but, like everything, it's not perfect... though fabulous. Here are my notes on the bag.

PROS

  • Product   is not bulky though fairly large, it holds a fair amount of things.
  • The addition of the adjustable strap makes it practical for hands-free shopping-type activities or a more chic bag-on-the-forearm look.
  • Great quality zipper and hardware that will not wear easily.
  • Soft leather makes it easy to use and allows for the sometimes necessary excessive stuffing of the bag. LOL. (Not recommended)
  • The colour actually hides basic dust/dirt well so although it is a tan suede fabric, it shouldn't be difficult to keep it looking clean.
  • The lining seems sturdy.
  • The bag is versatile and can be used for work or shopping.
  • Stitching and general assembly appears very secure.
  • Side compartments are convenient for easy access to keys/phones and other small items.

CONS

  • There are no sizeable interior compartments.
  • It looks big but doesn't quite hold as much as expected.
  • The side flap does cannot be fastened shut though storing it tucked into the compartment allows it to maintain its downward covering shape.
  • The closure for the long removable strap is nice but the ball will wear the fastening hole over time. It's best to keep the long strap on at all times if you want to keep it functional and in tip top condition.

    Lock & Twist Gel Review.

Please note. This post has been reworked from a previous post in 2009.

Organic Root Stimulator Lock and Twist Gel

I hadn't used the Organic Root Stimulator Lock & Twist GEL in a while and decided to try it out again. It's OK. Did I get an incredibly wonderful hold from it? Certainly not. Did it leave my hair soft? Relatively, but not for long. The gel promises no flakes and Organic Root Stimulator delivers. I've never received any flaking from using this gel.

Please note - this is not a regular hair gel. It is recommended for use to help set locks and twists.

Organic Root Stimulator Lock and Twist Gel on Medium-length natural hair. (2009)

I used it on dry hair but it is probably best used on wet hair. This is a problem if you prefer to style on dry hair. Why? This product makes dry stretched hair limp. If you use it on wet hair, however, if will definitely be a lot more plump though it will shrink.

I tried retwisting with this product on locks in the past year (2012). It doesn't give me enough hold and my hair unravels even before a wash. Nevertheless, a lot of other people have had much success with this product. It simply don't hold on my hair. If you are looking for a light hold or you aren't concerned with hold, this is your product.

You will still need another product for daily moisturizing. The top three ingredients are Water, Coconut Milk extract and Soybean Oil so I don't think it's too bad but you have to decide if the rest of ingredients are to your taste. I know many of you prefer all-natural products so do a little more research online if that is what you're looking for because this product is not all-natural. It's not too bad but I'd rather use my Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream for my twists. It leaves my hair very moisturised for a much longer time.

Check out the following YouTube reviews on loose natural hair.

    Rating:  3/5 Stars

    Tips for Use

    • Adds both moisture and hold without build-up or flaking.
    • Contains no Alcohol, Hydroxide or Beeswax.
    • Will not cause flaking or buildup.
    • Best when set with a dryer.

    Directions for Use:
Shampoo and condition hair. Apply gel to entire hair. Twist using a comb, double, or free-hand twists. If hair starts to dry while twisting spray with water. Set under dryer for best results.

    Ingredients

PRODUCT REVIEW | Earth's Nectar Minoi Hair Milk

I've been in review heaven lately since I've received quite a few products that I love. This review is for Earth's Nectar Monoi Hair Milk. Check out the pros, cons, product description and ingredients below.

    PROS
    • Earth Nectar's Minoi Hair Milk is very moisturising.
    • The moisturising properties are long-lasting.
    • Hair can be spritzed with water at night to revive the product instead of reapplying.
    • Minoi Hair Milk can be used as a detangling product on dry hair is hair is first spritzed with water even though it is a daily moisturiser.
    • Nice moisturized-feeling slip for detangling.
    • A little goes a long way.
    • The Minoi Hair Milk has a pleasant honey-infused nutty scent... which I love.

    CONS
    • The product can be a little oily. However, it seems to dry out during the day while allowing the hair to maintain moisture.
    • The product is way too small and expensive for my liking but I like it so much I might get just buy it when it's done.

REVIEW & DEMOS | Cantu® Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream

My braid-out on natural hair with Cantu® Shea Butter for Natural Hair Coconut Curling Creme

It's Monday morning and I'm very happy with my braid-out which wasn't even fully dry when I left the house this morning - which is why my curls aren't more defined. I used the Cantu® Shea Butter for Natural Hair Coconut Curling Cream and so far, I'm loving it... but I will hold on a verdict till I insert the picture at the end of the day which will follow at the bottom of this blog post.

Cantu® Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream
PRICE in USD – $9 in USA  •  $19 in Jamaica (for now)
SPECIAL FEATURES – Contains NO parabens, mineral oil, sulfates, silicone, paraffin, gluten...

I am SO HAPPY that Cantu® contacted me to review their new line of products specifically for natural hair. Keep reading to see my full review of this product. It has become an absolute necessity in my arsenal of products for my natural hair.

PRO – My hair is soft and doesn't feel heavy or oily even though I used quite a bit of this product and I have no buildup even after several days of use.
CON –  I cannot use this product for a wash n' go. It doesn't weight down my type 4 kinky hair enough... but that's OK since it leaves my hair very light and build-up free.

PRO – My hair is super-duper defined! I have never gotten results like these with a product. My plaits didn't even fully dry before I unravelled them and I still got good definition (despite a lot of shrinkage).

CON – The Coconut Curling Cream made my hair take forever to dry. After 12 hours, my hair was still very damp. I had to put a diffuser to it in the morning and still left with it damp to head to work.

Definition received from using Cantu® Coconut Curling Cream on wet hair.

PRO – This Cantu® product can be used on wet or dry hair so I don't have to wet my hair at night to set it (plait/twist it) for the next day's braid-out or twist-out.

CON – Sorry, I'm all out of cons. I love this thing soooo much!
