How To Manage and Reduce Frizz – For Locked Hair

Frizz and fly-aways can be a very difficult thing to deal with when locking your hair. Commonly known as the "ugly stage," the period when hair begins to condense and fuzz up is a huge reason for which many do-it-yourself lockers end up unlocking their locks and going back to loose natural hair. This video shows you one method for reducing your hair while encouraging your hair to lock/bind together.

Here are a few other things you can do to help reduce the look of frizz while locking.

  • Use a gel with greater hold.
  • Palm-roll the length of your hair.
  • Do an updo. Pinning your hair up helps to reduce the number of frizzy loose strands that are visible.
  • Curl your hair. Even if the hair is frizzy, it still looks styled.
  • Use a light gel on your edges and tie them down at night with a scarf to help set a neater looking hairline.

  1. Love the tips! What kinds of gel do you recommend? Many locticians use regular gel which we at Beautiful Earth see as a definite no-no for locs (or any hair!). If you're not using a natural gel like the Ecostyler than we recommend you stick to natural loc products like aloe vera gel or Beautiful Earth's Honey Loc & Twist Butter, with no alcohol to dry the hair or petroleum to cause extra build up.
