Question

I just did the"big chop." I'm down to less than a inch of new growth. What do I use to get my hair to curl up?

Answer

I've heard this question sooo many times and am happy to finally address it on the blog as it is something that even I asked years ago as a new natural. I always find the question very interesting as "typical"natural hair is extremely coily and curls onto itself but whether you have waves, curls, coils or kinks, there are several possibilities for both short and long hair.

Kinky Curly  Curling Custard, Tangle Teezer, Denman Brush, Eco Styler Gel

Possibility 1

Step 1 – Apply a curling product/curl activator gel like Kinky-Curly Curling Custard or Eco Styler Gel to damp/wet hair. Some people are successful with just conditioner so you can try that first before buying a new product.
Step 2 – Comb hair with a Denman brush or Tangle Teezer. These are known for making curls pop. This is especially helpful if you do not have distinct curls.
Step 3 – Do not manipulate hair at all. Allow the curls to fully dry in place and avoid playing with your hair for the day. Manipulating your curls may cause them to frizz up.

See the video at the end for an idea of how this may be achieved on curly hair.

See it done on longer hair.

Possibility 2

Your hair may just not be made to curl the way you want it to. Many women spend many months and lots of money searching for the miracle product that will make their hair curl. For some of us, it's just not meant to be. If you do not get your desired curl, try to embrace your true natural hair. If you look at the image at the start, you can clearly be stunningly beautiful without distinct curls.

  1. Yes, all hair is not meant to curl. I found this out and had to learn to embrace what I had.
