Colour-treated natural hair |
Dying your healthy natural hair is just fine as long as you're prepared to take care of your hair.I have managed to maintain healthy colour-treated hair and have a few suggestions for maintaining healthy dyed natural hair at home. You must be careful about replenishing the protein that permanent colour usually breaks down and moisturise regularly to keep your hair from becoming brittle and breaking.

Coloured Natural Hair |
For healthy colour-treated hair, I suggest:
- don't do a permanent colour when a semi-permanent will do. I suggest semi-permanent dyes for covering up greys. Semi-permanent colours are usually more gentle than permanent colours.
- weekly deep conditioning treatments. Never skip a treatment.
- using moisturising shampoos.
- alternating between light protein (like Aphogee 2 Minute Reconstructor) and a moisture condition of your choice each week.
- moisturising with a water based leave-in and sealing in the moisture with coconut oil every night.
- always sleeping with a satin bonnet to protect your more fragile coloured hair.
- protecting your hair from chlorine by wetting hair and applying a leave-in and shower cap before taking a dip.
- not overlapping your touch-up on your previously dyed hair if you can help it. It's just as how you wouldn't overlap a relaxer. Overlapping can cause damage to previously dyed hair. This is especially so for a permanent colour.
- avoiding using heat. Heat dries out your hair and dyed hair tends to get dry easily. Try roller sets and wrapping the get the curls you desire. And, of course, always use a heat protectant.
Also wash your hair with cold water to help preserve the colour
ReplyDeleteThanks for that Niki. I'll try to remember to add that to a post on how to maintain the colour itself.
DeleteHattie here...Thankyou so much for this post! Today I got my black hair professionally colored to a golden color and have been looking everywhere online for care advice but found nothing as detailed as this. I appreciate hearing from someone with personal experience. My previously very soft hair feels rough and looks unusually dry. I'm tempted to jump in the shower and soak it even though it's already been washed and excessively manipulated today. Do you think using yogurt as a potein treatment on a weekly basis will work?
ReplyDeleteHey Hattie. I am glad that you enjoyed the post. I have never used yogurt. My thinking is that those things are a bit... unnecessary. Just buy the pre-made products that balance out your hair like the APhogee 2 minute reconstructor. Something like that ensures that you get protein and strength and not toooo much protein too. So your pH remains balanced and your hair healthy. I'd suggest using it every two weeks to maintain your coloured hair.
DeleteI guess my thinking was that most pre-made products don't really contain, for example, the protein that they claim to contain. I don't know where I got that idea from. But I've noticed alot of people like how APhogee works in their hair, so there has got to be something right about it. I'm going to try it. I just read an article about how kinky hair should be bleached gradually rather than in one day or risk serious damage!!! We'll as you know, I had my hair dyed last Friday and it WAS done in one day, so I'm freaking out just a little. I have been following your hair care advice for color treated hair, and so far, my hair looks beautiful and feels healthy and even really soft. But of course I need to maintain this so making sure I get that protein and moisture balance right is important. Thanks again. ~Hattie
