Detangling Micro Twists

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Yup. That's how I felt like screaming earlier today. My darling cousin who twisted my hair clearly didn't detangle properly before twisting. I could feel the knots that she twisted in. It took upwards of 5/6 hours to detangle my hair accompanied with many frustrated moans. Honestly people, I will NEVER put my hair in micro twists again. It works for some people. It doesn't for me. Someone asked me to do a tutorial on detangling micro twist but I really don't have any tips on detangling except for the following:

1. Fully detangle before you twist.
2. Use loads of conditioner

I'm getting my hair braided and I'm not sure about the twists since they're so hard for me to detangle but whatever. *sigh* I'm just exasperated after all that detangling I did earlier. I even went right back to thinking of locking. With my hair getting longer, I fear what will happen when I have to wash and detangle in another year or two with longer hair. It's such a scary thought. I guess there are both advantages and disadvantaged to having long natural hair. The result - I think I'll be going to the salon more often when my hair gets long if I don't figure something out. Fact is though, when I blow-dry and style, I'm fine with my hair. I think the no-heat thing is just not for me. Besides, there are tons of way to protect my hair from heat so if it makes my life easier, why fight it. I can always ease off the heat for a while if I see it becoming damaging right?

I'm gonna stick with the natural loose hair for now and not lock which means I'm getting my hair braided either today or later this week before I go back to the U.S. It costs under $50 (including hair) Jamaica and all of $180 at the half-decent places I know in Maryland so I'm definitely gettng braided up before I go back. Anyway, enough for now. I'll talk about my removing the alkaline base from my kanekalon hair later :-) That will be entertaining. LOL. Until then...

Keep It Kinky!

  1. I feel your pain honey. That detangling is on a whole other level. Almost feels like your hair is locked!!

  2. I think I might go that direction too. My hair might retain length better if I apply heat and keep my ends straight. It wouldn't hurt to try.

  3. Wow, that must have been a lot of work. I only put a few very small braids in my hair to make bangs and it was a pain to remove. Can't imagine what you went through.

  4. Do you have any pics of the twists?? This might be such an obvious question.... but are micro twists like Senegalese twists? I'm trying to picture what you're talking abut in my head.

Okay maybe I'll take my question back lol and go with my assumption =]

  5. hey KL -- I think the technique used to do your microtwists is part of what caused the detangling issues.
    - it seems like they twist each strand independently before they twist it on each other. Great for definition, but horrible to unfurl.
    - Second, swimming with twists without braided roots -- nightmare! Ive been there and done that. I always recommended pre-saturating the hair with conditioner before swimming and wearing a swim cap.
    - cowash twists and remove buildup with ACV or seriously diluted mild shampoos! I avoid shampoo like the plague with twists because the stripping seems to wrap more of the stray frizzy hair around my twists, making it hard to detangle.
    - expect to wear a twistout for a while (3+ days), and pre-saturate the hair with oils and conditioner for at least 3 days before you start detangling. This helps me out a lot. I also never do all the detangling in one day because I will get pissed off at my hair and do something stupid.

Now your new twists look awesome-you shouldnt have any problems taking those down, but I would still incorporate the tips I mentioned above.

    Many blessings,

  6. HEy Lina,

If you watched my videos you'll see that I did pre-saturate with conditioner before swimming. I had the twist-out for exactly 3 days. When I twist without twisting independently before, my hair ALWAYS looses out. It just doesn't work for me... unless i use loc gel which cause buildup and my hair starts locking in just a week or two.

ALSO - the MAIN problem was that my cousin didn't detangle some of my hair before twisting up so knots were twisted in.

Plain and simple - I will NEVER micro-rope-twist EVER again. I actually did the detangling in 2 days too - one night and morning. it's just NEVER going to happen again. I'm not going to rope twist anymore either but we'll see. Maybe if it's big.

Also - my roots weren't matted or hard to detangle. It was the actual length. So I don't think i need braided roots or anything.

Thanks for the suggestions but with the exception of the ACV wash I've already done everything you suggested and everyone else suggested too. Different hair responds differently.

I had ZERO buildup. Micro-twists are just not for me and the actual process of micro-twisting is just too long. I don't need to sit for that many hours just to have to spend just as much time detangling. I rather enjoy the versatility of loose hair or styling weekly.
