Protein Treatments Damage our Hair?

"Protein treatments are an excellent solution for repairing damaged hair, but no more than once a month. Anything more than that could result in breakage.", says Essence natural hair expert, Eugene Smith.

Could too much treatment be the culprit of my recent hair damage and breakage. Well people, I'm going to be reducing the amount of protein treatments I do on my hair. I was treating sometimes as much as twice a week. I'm going to purchase an oil and refine my regimen. Let's see if Eugene's theory is correct.

I became a deep conditioning addict. Time to do things in moderation.Too much of a good thing is bad.

  2. Hi Mimi. Thanks for coming by. I sure will let you all know. Once or twice a week is obviously too much of a good thing.

  3. i just read an interesting statement in that Essence article...
“I don’t recommend conditioning natural hair; instead of conditioner, add oils," suggests Smith. "Conditioner is not as beneficial to natural hair because conditioner contains a lot of waxy type substances that can cover and clog the hair cuticle, preventing it from receiving moisture. Oil goes straight into the cuticle and nourishes the strands.”

How do you feel about not conditioning the hair and the usage of oils only? My hair would not like that. Oil does nothing for my hair...
I know some conditioners have cones etc., but the more natural or less chemical filled conditioners are not so bad. Should we eliminate them totally?

  4. Wow. That's definitely too much from what I've researched.

It is said that too much can make your hair brittle, which causes breakage.

Once a month is plenty and it's only necessary if you have weak strands.

  5. I think he's probably right. Once a month is probably enough. That's how much I was doing when my hair was at optimal health. If you read all of them he doesn't say only use oils. He says deep condition once a month. So for me, a mild shampoo or regular conditioner wash is probably enough if I use oils after. Oil does a lot for my hair. Are you using natural oils or petrolatum based oils? Perhaps you could read more on it but ultimately you have to do what is best for your own hair after you've done some research.

  7. Interesting, my hair loves protein. I don't do protein treatments, but I do use protein conditioners. I think it depends on how you balance that protein with moisture. Then again everyone's hair is different.
