Braids Extensions Considerations

Braids extensions are one of the most convenient and popular styles for black women across the world. It can be worn for 2 months without any damage to your natural hair when properly installed and cared for. Some people even wear them longer. Keep reading to find out some of the advantages and disadvantages of braiding and to find out how to protect your hair during the process.

 Advantages of Braiding

  • Gives a break from daily styling.
  • Good for women who are transitioning and are having difficulty managing their two textures.
  • Good protective, low-manipulation style for those wanting to grow their hair to longer lengths.

Disadvantages of Micro-Braiding
  • If done improperly, the hairline is at high risk of damage.
  • It can be difficult to get the necessary moisture your natural hair . This particularly difficult with the small and tightly plaited or twisted hairstyles.

There are simple ways of preventing damage from braids before you begin the process.

  1. Ensure that you deep condition your hair before going to the salon. It is not wise to add extensions to weak hair.
  2. Try to receive a reference from a trusted friend when choosing a stylist. If you are going to use a listed stylist, visit the salon and ask about their methods before you begin.
  3. When going to someone new, I always wash, gently detangle and blow-dry my own hair. I use a heat protectant, of course. Unfortunately, I've never been to a salon, even a natural hair salon, where they're used heat protectant before blow-drying my hair.
  4. Choose the type of hair wisely. Use online resources to see what type of hair may be best. You also need to look into the type of care that may be required for that specific hair.
I hope these tips and thoughts will help you the next time you decide to get braids extensions.
