Plus Sized, Natural Model: Sabina

  1. This is really interesting because Sabina wasn't always a plus size model. I remember following her when ManeandChic.com first introduced her on her series of post about curly-haired models. I think Sabina looks beautiful either way. What's amazing to me, however, is that "in real life" Sabina would never be seen as "plus size". She just looks like a beautiful, healthy, normal sized girl. Although I appreciate the move for more diverse body types in fashion, I think even the "plus size" label makes it seem as if girls of Sabina's size are somehow different from normal body standards when in actuality, it's the other way around. Size 00 is more of an anomaly than someone of Sabina's size, but the industry keeps perpetuating that the former is more acceptable. That mindset is unfortunate, but nevertheless I am excited to see Sabina find success as a "plus-size" model too.

  2. Hey Courtney. I'm inclined to agree with you on many points. I have a problem with all of the labels.

A model is a model. I don't get the need for a size-specific label at all. Having been both tiny and so-called "plus-sized" in my adult years, I look at things differently from how I see many women writing about the modeling industry.

Some women are thin, very thin, and naturally so. Others are thicker, naturally thicker. Often times, both are healthy. It feels like there is a fight between thin and thick. Frankly, just as we have women who have blue or brown eyes, women are just women (thick or thin). We all look different (thank God) and that's a good thing.

We just need to work on accepting all healthy-looking women. And, of course, not all thick (or thin) women are healthy.

Hmmm. I feel a blog post or video coming on. lol.
