- STOP USING DIRECT HEAT: Direct heat damages hair. It's that simple. Cutting out heat all together is the best way to go but minimize it's use as much as possible and you'll significantly reduce the number of annoying split ends that send you to the salon for a trim every 4-6 weeks. Another tip - If you must use heat, hooded dryers are better than blow dryers.
- DEEP CONDITION YOUR HAIR: You don't have to deep condition your hair every single week. Just take time out every two weeks to pamper yourself and your hair. Use a deep protein conditioner like a cheap hair cholesterol every two weeks and ensure that you follow up with moisturizing or instant conditioners in between. I like Suave Humectant Conditioner as an instant conditioner. Suave's Tropical Coconut Conditioner is pretty good too. If your hair gets mushy, use a protein leave-in from Infusium 23.
- USE A LEAVE-IN: Remember that a leave-in is anything that you leave in your hair. Heheh. Seriously though, even oil is a leave-in. It doesn't have to be some expensive concoction with a pretty label in a store. I use extra virgin coconut oil. It both moisturizes and helps hair naturally retain protein while giving a nice shine. It's the easiest, and amongst the least expensive products that will do a lot for just a small cost. This can be put on your hair both in the morning and at night.

Great post. I would love to hear from those who had locs, but chose to remove them and wear their hair in a different state of naturalness. What differences did they notice, pros and cons of both styles, regrets regarding either style, and overall advice for those thinking of un-locing.
