Natural diva, Koku Gonza, is using her first full album, Radiozophrenic, to carve out her space in the Neo Soul-World Music world. Her tracks skip between New Soul music and World music ropes, sometimes becoming entagled. Those tangles and knots create the beautiful combination of that Neo Soul-World Music that she aspires towards.
Radiozophrenic is a brave attempt at neo soul-world music but it is little surprise that this new singer would take on such an experimental genre. Her Tanzanian father was a folk singer/songwriter and guitar player while her mother, a Jazz and Gospel artist from South Carolina played the flute, keyboard and saxophone. Koku's voice seems to blend with the music, sometimes like it's own instrument too often subdued. Her voice is that of a lighter Jill Scott - warm and easy to listen to.
A number of her tracks made it into my regular rotation in my Neo Soul mix but please check her out her music by visiting Koku's website to join her mailing list and receive two free songs via email.
Who is Koku Gonza? (Excerpt from press release)
"Koku Gonza is one of the artists ushering in the “Neo Soul-World Music” movement with the release of her highly anticipated third CD, Radiozophrenic. Radiozophrenic encompasses her schizophrenic passion for genre blending and musical variety. Audiences can expect to hear elements of American Neo-Soul/R&B, Pop and the global vibes of East Africa from Koku Gonza... Koku Gonza’s music is parallel to the translation of her Kihaya name, which means lovely. She applies love, soul and passion into the ingredients of her genre defiant pallet on her first full- length album, Radiozophrenic."
