A Homemade Deep Moisturizing Conditioner Review

I can't say that I saw this exact recipe anywhere but from a mixture of recipes and information, I ended up with:

–  1 part extra virgin coconut oil
–  1 part extra virgin olive oil
–  1 part honey
The sticky mixture mixed nicely after going in the microwave for a few (10-15) seconds. I applied it using a spoon, resisting the urge to taste it. It smells sooooo good.

Despite the heavenly scent, the real test of my concoction's worth is it's ability to moisturize and condition. Well, it certainly did it's job. I could feel the change in my hair within a few minutes. I kept it on for about 20 minutes and it didn't dry at all. I do not recommend detangling with this mixture, however, and you must use a shampoo to wash it out with warm water. A cold or conditioner wash will not be sufficient. This sticky stuff will not leave your hair without the proper products.

After drying my hair, I followed up with coconut oil and did a braid-out. It was fantastic and soft. While I know I will need a few more treatments for my hair to recover from it's very dry state, this mixture was far more successful than many products I have tried.
Hair Update: I just took down my locs (again) and my hair was ridiculously dry from months of no moisturizing. (I've given up on locs by the way. I'm just too fickle with my hair). I guess I'll be blogging much more now that I have to pay attention to my hair again. lol.

  2. Hahaha. I know girl. Thanks. I'm now wondering what to use as a leave-in. I'm sticking hoping to only use Ph balanced products so I'm hesitant to waste money trying random stuff.

  3. i did this exact mix for my nearly 2 year old daughter over the weekend. Instead of putting the mix in the microwave, I let it sit inside hot water for 1 mins and the coconut oil dissolved. my daughter's hair came out really soft and moisturised.
i have braids on if not it woulda been a mummy-daughter conditioning weekend :)

  4. Locs aren't for everyone at everytime. If you were locing because you wanted a more permanent look, have you thought of wearing coils more and then doing coil outs. This would give you the best of both worlds. In any case I'm glad you're flexible with your hair because I love your website and ideas.

Hi there. Yes, I will definitely be doing this again. I'm glad you liked it. Now I'm thinking of tweaking it for use as a salad dressing. lol.

Hi lady. Thanks for reading and commenting. You're spot on with your suggestion. I don't like the salon and can't do coils on my own but that style is something I've done before and considered doing again. Thanks for the reminder. I can do it every once in a while.

  6. The partings for your locs were so neat and perfect and I was so looking forward to see those locs form. Anyway I'm not suprise you took them down, I always had a gut feeling you would want to explore your nature hair more and locs were just too permanent. I hope you will try the rebraid method when you need a break from the demands of natural hair.
