You've probably heard about the Tangle Teezer before. It has taken the online natural hair community by storm for the last few years as one of the most revolutionary detangling tools around for making kinky and curly hair easier and painless to detangle on wet or dry hair. See the review I did last year. Since then, many look-a-likes have come on the market. I decided to purchase the Tangle Tamer Max by the brand Plugged In from Sally Beauty in the USA to do a comparison.
COST
The Tangle Tamer Max retails for $10.00 which is $2.99 less costly than the Tangle Teezer.
DESIGN
The design, as you can tell is very similar but there are some differences.
- The Tangle Tamer Max features a handle while the Teezer does not. This however does not assist usability as both products are still slippery when wet or if the hand using the product is too moisturized or has product on it. The handle would only be an asset if it had a grip feature - which it does not.
- The teeth, though similar in design are different. The teeth of the Tamer Max re about 1 and 1/2 the diameter of the Teezer. I have noticed, therefore, that the Tamer Max is a bit more durable.
- The ends of the teeth of the Tamer Max also seem to be a bit thicker. I will talk about how this influences the ability to detangle in the next section.
USE
As mentioned in 2 & 3 above, the Tamer Max's teeth are a little bit thicker and the ends less pointed. As many people have accused the Tangle Teezer of detangling beautifully but shredding their hair, this could be considered a positive feature for the Tamer. In my experience, however, the Tangle Teezer detangles my type 4 kinky hair just a little bit better than the Tamer, and without any split ends.
Overall, however, there is hardly a difference. The handle for the Tangle Tamer Max doesn't help since I still end up holding the body of the brush instead of the handle anyway.
One main difference is that the Tangle Tamer Max is a wee bit more durable because of the thicker teeth.This may be why I believe that the Tangle Teezer is a weeee bit better at getting into those finer tangles but I would hesitate to definitively say that either is better.
OVERALL REVIEW NOTES
Both products are gently in detangling kinky and curly hair. They can be used on wet or dry hair. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you hair is fully moisturized before it is used on dry hair. This brush is quite versatility, however, and can also be used on straight/relaxed hair.
If I were to repurchase, I would probably get the Tangle Tamer Max since it is slightly more durable.
Haven't tried the tangle tamer, but hte tangle teezer ended up shredding my hair.
ReplyDeleteI love your site, which I found while searching this issue. I went to Sally's to purchase a Teezer, but they only had the Tamer Max. The clerk said they were the same, so I got it. I was debating taking it back after trying it on my daughter's hair (3c/4a-ish) because it does not seem to work any better than a paddle brush and it is harder for me to use because it gets slimy very quickly. But then my very tender-headed daughter said it hurt much less so I've decided to keep it. It was not the miracle detangler I was looking for, but anything that reduces her pain is worth the money.
