Nique's Locks

Nique looks like at peace in an oasis with her naturally locked hair

Name: Nique

From: Ft Lauderdale, Florida

Daily Grind: Singing in music group 3b4jHoy, designing and acting

KiK: How long have you had locs and why did you decide to get them?
Nique
: I decided to go that route the day my big sister showed me various pictures of people who had such beautiful styled locs. It was a new year and I wanted a new me so I pretty much went for it. Yes, part of me did think about my afro puff, but having worn extensions that resembled locs for a while, I would surmise it was destiny. I was first introduced to sisterlocks because of the versatility and had them installed by a loctitican, but later combined them to make larger ones. Since combining them, I’ve done my hair on my own. It will be 5 years in February!  Watch her hair journey in the video above.

KiK: Do you ever miss your loose natural hair though?
Nique
: Sometimes, when I see others with either styled or loose hair, I do wish I could pull on my little coils, but I don’t dwell on it. I’m not one to constantly style my hair so locs are perfect for me. I want them to grow really long, just not to the ground..lol

.

KiK: Tell us more about what method you used to start your locks?

Nique
: The loctitian who started my hair, used the interlock method to keep my sisterlocks secure. I had about 4 to 4 ½ inches of new growth and the result was about 530 tiny locs.

KiK: How do you maintain your hair now?
Nique
: When I combined my hair I continued with that same method until I was introduced to palm roll. It’s given me neater locs and I find it easier to roll and pin it.

KiK: If you could loc your hair again, what would you do differently?
Nique
: I would probably start them bigger, but not too big. I love how beautiful they look.

KiK: Will you ever cut or cut off your locs?
Nique
: I really don’t think I will. I just love my journey.

KiK: What advice would you give to anyone just starting locks?
Nique
: My advice would simply be to have patience and enjoy your loc journey from the short stage to the long stage. Style it, decorate it and have fun!

KiK: So tell us more about your daily grind. How did you get started and where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Nique
: I’ve started a company with my sister called “Afnika” so I’m constantly working on new pieces. I’m also a singer, songwriter and worship leader in a group with my sisters called 3b4jHoy. Our third album is coming out soon. In 5 years I see myself doing many things, like owning a fashion shop, traveling and doing shows, but I’ll just leave all that in God’s hands. He knows my dreams and he knows what’s best for me according to his will. I just want to be happy and healthy
