My 100-Day Hair Challenge

Hey Everybody! I started a 100-Day Hair Challenge on December 17 2008. It will end on March 27, 2009.

My hair is currently in really small twists done on my natural hair with nothing added. You can click on the picture for a larger view. I'm so happy with the length I've achieved in the past year. This is about two years of new growth. Think I can double this length in another two years? Anyway, on to my hair challenge. This was inspired by Black Onyx on Fotki/Youtube. My rules are a little different though.

Hair Challenge Commandments
  1. Thou shalt not comb or brush thy hair more than once a week. (combing is not the same as styling.)
  2. Thou shalt keep thy hair in protective styles at all times.(Protective styles are styles that require no combing and/or do not touch your neck. I'll talk more about this in a future post.)
  3. Thou shalt not use heat on thy hair.
  4. Thou shalt not dye thy hair.
  5. Thou shalt deep condition thy hair regularly.
  6. Thou shalt moisturize everyday.
  7. Thou shalt spray Leave-in on ends once per week. (I advise doing this after a wash)
  8. Thou shalt cover thy hair with a satin scarf every night to keep the moisture locked in.
  9. Thou shalt eat as healthily as possible and drink 8 glasses of water per day.
  10. Thou shalt love thy hair enough to take the time out to keep it healthy and beautiful.
Why am I doing this?
Well for one, I don't want to have to untangle my hair all the time. For two, well, see one. I guess it would be nice to get a lot more length from it as a bonus. I'm heading back to the US soon and I really want to protect my hair from the cold. I decided I'm not ready for locs yet so I'm just trying to stay out of my hair as much as possible while keeping it healthy (and kinky).

Will You Join Me??
I'd love some company. Let me know if you're interested in joining my challenge - even if just for a little while. I'd love to see how you all do too.

Keep It Kinky
Happy Holidays!

  1. This is a great challenge. There are a lot of things going on here. I am with you on the no heat thing and no dye. I don't usually comb or brush my hair much anyway, so I can go with that. I don't moisturize everyday because I don't have to; my hair retains moisture rather well. I cover my hair in a bonnet every night (the tension from a scarf's knot is not good for me). I have to work on eating better and drinking the water.

Have you considered taking a multivitamin as well? That could help too =)

    Good luck!

  3. Great. One to join. I already take a multi-vatamin so I guess that's why it didn't occur to me. Yeah - there's a lot going on lol... or being left out.
    Thanks for joining me!

  5. Great challenge - I am currently in a protective style challenge that is very similar. So I guess I am already joining you :o)

I am attempting to wear my hair in protective styles for one year. I started in August and will go until next August of course. I have been wearing box braids and taking them down every one to two months to redo. I have been washing and conditioning in between.

So far I'm on my third set going for three months I will take them down in January - no too sure if I want to put box braids back in or twists - so I will be keeping an eye on your protective styles to get some ideas.

  6. Wow Laquita. One year!? I think 100 days will be a struggle. I'd love to see your results. I hope I can be as disciplined. I'm taking these down in a little under 3 weeks to get my hair braided. Anyway, keep in touch and good luck!

  11. I'm in! I did my kinky twists at the beginning of this month. Hopefully I can keep them in for the whole 100 day hair challenge. I have a tendency of taking braids out a month or so after I get them.

I absolutely love that you are doing this. I am attempting to wear my hair in protective styles as much as possible, so I am definitely in.

  13. I will do it as soon as I get some money. I keep getting antsy and want to cut, flat iron, braid, etc my hair every other day. I need to leave it alone. So this will be good for me.

  14. Hey! Dee~Nappy here. Just wanted to let you know that i'm jumping on this bandwagon. Although I wasn't aware of it, my official start date was Dec 24th when I put in a set of box braids, that I'll keep doing and redoing for a while. I definitely want to keep with the 100 days, but if I can go longer I will, and I'll probably change it up from braids to twists to extensions, just to keep the variety goin.
    -Thanks Kinky Lady and HHG!!!

  16. That's great. I'm not encouraging anyone to keep styles beyond their comfort level. Switching it up once in a while is great. Can't wait to see everyone's results. Good luck!

  18. Hey are you a professional journalist? This article is very well written, as compared to most other blogs i saw today….

  19. Hi Anonymous. Thanks for noticing. I'm not a journalist but I have a master's degree in a communications-based degree. I try to keep it very casual here though. I even stopped blogging because I couldn't find the time to make it as professional as I'd like. Thanks for the kind words though.
