My Thoughts on Fake Hair

To many, it may seem a waste of money to remove extensions after one week. To me, it was an investment in the health of my hair. On delicately removing one of the painful slipping braids extensions from my hairline, I lost a half of my natural hair in that plait... from the root! I decided that extensions are just not for me.

I am loving my natural hair.

Don't get me wrong. I loved the look of the braids. But besides hating the course feel of the hair, It simply felt unnatural and I felt fake for wearing them. I've been wondering for a while why so many women who decide to embrace their natural hair also decide to embrace artificial hair extensions and wigs.

Well, I have decided to grow out my hair using my natural hair alone (though I'll keep my wig in case of emergencies but really have no intention of using it). The pictures in this post show the style I was left with after taking out the extensions. (smiling excitedly) I see many braid-out and twist-out hairstyles in my future.

Thinking that fake hair is very much in my past.

  4. I am on the same page. I wore braids (extensions) one time in my life and could never do it again.

  6. @ Anonymous. Thanks last. You're so right about it being disappointing shortly after.

@ Cherish. Weaves seem to do OK on some people. If you want to switch it up it's definitely an option.

@Economy of Style. LOL. Girl, I gave braids so many tries. They used to work for me back in the day though. I think I just need to find a good stylist. But right now, I'm think why bother sitting for 6-7 hrs when I have hair on my head.

A Anonymous. You are too kind girl. I'm actually starting to enjoy the hair now. Maybe it's because I've just accepted it instead of trying to get it to be a certain way.

  7. Your hair is gorgeous. I can't wait to see how you style it. I love twists and twists outs. I'm with you on the fake hair, it's a thing of the past.

  9. I still rock the extensions from time to time I do them myself so it is a really cheap protective style for me no more than $10. Since I do them myself I can feel if it is too tight and therefore do them not to damage my hairline. I also rock the wig from time to time when I want the straight look without the heat.

  10. I totally identify with you. I have in a weave now and am seriously contemplating letting it be my last (it's actually my third, I'd NEVER thought I'd let a weave touch my head!).

I think despite the growth that 'protective styles' provide, the quality of your hair is compromised by all the pulling and tugging.

Truth be told, I love the convenience of not having to style my hair - I have fine hair that fuzzes as soon as I finish doing it and it DRIVES ME CRAZY.

Your hair looks lovely, kudos to discovering what works for you on this journey!

  11. Hi NIki,

You know, I hope you don't think I'm being too forward. But I don't understand why we struggle so much with frizz. It used to bother me too but now I think it's just a characteristic of our hair so just like curly, frizzy is just another characteristic. You'll feel a lot more free and at peace when you just accept your hair as it is and embrace it. When you can do that, even bad hair days won't bother you. It's like we are constantly fighting against our hair. Anyway, I know you['ll find what works for you soon too. We all do.
