I'm floored. Had to check the year on my calendar.
The 20th century alone has been rife with examples of "misspent youth" and unnecessary force. Starkey's views of an "us" vs "them" society are the exact sort of views the looters have, regardless of their race. They are not thinking they are hurting store owners or taking food off the tables of hard-working families. They are thinking about their new TV or their new trainers.
If you want to call whites, the new blacks, are blacks now the old vikings? The old huns? What?
And I love how Starkey talks about the Jamaican patois as an indicator of a lack of intelligence. You come from a different country therefore you should change your accent so people won't think you're stupid? Not that we have to enlighten the people who make such prejudiced generalizations based on their own small-mindedness. I hope he loses whatever academic accreditation he supposedly earned (right there I'm making a generalization by assuming because of his color and posh accent, he didn't actually earn his degree by study, but rather nepotism and a dose of the "good ole boys" network.
Wow. I'm not surprised though. There are so many "educated" people out there (of all races) who are just as clueless. Very sad. Love the rebuttal. THAT is what needs to be heard.
Slightly off point, but this dude (like so many pontificating about this in the media) can't tell the difference between 'yoof speak' and slang, and actual Jamaican patois. One borrows from the other, but they're not the same thing.
wow, I was fuming! fuming! listening to this man! And thank you for posting that response video, the young man got it right Mr. Starkey is an educated illiterate.
Wow.

Loved the rebuttal, though. It gave me hope.
