Should You Trim/De-fuzz Your Locs?

Most of us don't like to be told what to do. We like to have control over our own life and that is why I will not tell you explicitly what to do with your hair. What I will do in this post, is tell you the advantages and disadvantages of trimming your locs and follow up with a video that shows my personal opinion.

Trimming locs is the process of cutting away stray hair/fuzz from the entire loc from root to tip to create a neater, frizz-free lock.

Advantages
  1. Your locs look neater.
  2. You spend less time managing frizz and therefore reduce the time spent on maintenance of your locs.
  3. It is the easiest way of reducing frizz and hair that has loosened from the length of the lock.
Disadvantages
  1. Your locs may become a lot thinner than they would have been without trimming. There are other ways to manage frizz and loose hairs when you have locs.
  2. Trimming weakens the loc. The network of hair is damaged and not as carefully connected so you may end up with locs that break off (especially if you dye your hair).
  3. If you ever decide to detangle/pick out your locs, you will end up with a lot of broken/cut strands.

  1. I think it is something to consider. I know of several people who have trimmed theirs because they were rather long.

  2. Hey T.D. Meyers.

I think you may have misunderstood. Perhaps you could watch the video to fully understand but I also included in the post with a definition of trimming locs. Cutting locks at the end is perfectly fine when done properly.

  3. Ok, I got you now, Diedre. Trimming for most of us here is called 'de-fuzzing'. And I agree with you that it does thin your locs as those extra bits of hair which are essentially like 'new growth' each time you get a reloc, are supposed to become intertwined and matted with the existing loc. However, if persons are bent on getting a de-fuzz, it ought to be done by their professional loctitian and even then only on the firm, mature potion of the loc. Not the newer growth. To me, that is dangerous.

  4. Yeah girl. It's definitely not a good practise but to each their own. If it is being done, it should truly be done by a professional as you say.
