Lock Appreciation Day Founder – QOChemist |
KiK connected with Lock Appreciation Day (LAD) founder, QOChemist on YouTube, to find out more about Lock Appreciation Day. Here is the mini interview.
Qochemist: Loc Appreciation Day is a day for all those who have locs, love locs, and appreciate locs to celebrate the beauty and diversity of this hairstyle.
KiK: Why was it founded?
Qochemist: Back in 2010 I found videos on Youtube where loose naturals were celebrating National Afro Day and having not been a loose natural for some time I felt a little left out and thought it would be nice to have a similar day of unity for loc wearers. I posed the question in a Youtube video and got an overwhelming response and the first ever Loc Appreciation Day was established.
KiK: What is the importance of LAD?
Qochemist: For me the importance is that for one day, a diverse group of people, who are often lumped together as being the same because of the common thread we share, our hairstyle, can celebrate the beauty and diversity of us and our hair. And perhaps change some people’s perceptions and educate others about loc’d hair and the people who choose this particular hair journey. After the celebration in 2011, I was overwhelmed to see just how far and wide the idea had spread and so it is important for another reason to me. To know that a simple idea could spark excitement in a bunch of virtual strangers and bring them together for a common cause was really quite amazing.
KiK: How can people get involved this year?
Qochemist: L.A.D is really what you choose to make of it. And that’s the beauty of it . There are collaboration videos and meetups being planned. A new tshirt has been designed and is available for purchase as well.
KiK: How long have you been locked?
Qochemist: June 16th will mark my 4 year loc anniversary and I am so happy to have started my journey.
KiK: Where can we find out more information on LAD?
Qochemist: You can find out more about L.A.D at the blog: locappreciationday.blogspot.com and by doing a general search on Youtube.
Great job!! I really appreciate your patience. I hope you won't mind us linking this article to the L.A.D blog
